Seen and unseen
"Art does not reproduce the visible; it makes visible." - Paul Klee.
The Swiss/German Klee is my favorite artist. As an adult, he put aside his Christian upbringing and chose theosophy for his life's religion. This saddens me because unless he secretly renounced this heresy before he died, I will not get to meet him some day.
Yet his simple sentence profoundly sums up what art is. I have struggled for many years to find a concrete place for art in the Father's creation. Then I recently came across this quotation from Klee. The line immediately reminded of something. But what? Was it something in the New Testament? Indeed, it was:
"... For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal." - apostle Paul, 2 Corinthians, 4:18.
The Father made us in His image. He is the ultimate Creator. And if we are made in His image, then we also have a desire - and ability - to create. Each of us can make visible through art, whether it is writing or painting or sculpting or architecture or making photographs or coloring with crayons. The urge is there. Let us be thankful for it whenever our art glorifies His Name ...
